According to Source Manchester United will face the sternest competition from Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho is set to return to the Spanish capital as head coach and the 63 year old is understood to be a huge admirer of Fernandes. That connection could prove decisive if Madrid formalise their interest. PSG are also believed to be keeping a close eye while West Ham hope a bidding war drives the price even higher.
The Hammers paid around £38m to sign Fernandes from Southampton last summer. They stand to make a healthy profit in the upcoming market. Fernandes scored five goals and registered five assists in 42 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign. In the Premier League he contributed three goals and four assists across 36 matches.
Fernandes has also become a full Portugal international during his time at the London Stadium. He was left out of the national team squad for the 2026 World Cup but his stock continues to rise at club level. He began his professional career at Sporting Lisbon making 10 appearances before joining Southampton in 2024. At Southampton he scored four times in 46 appearances ahead of his switch to West Ham.
The Hammers are thought to have been confident of keeping Fernandes had they stayed in the Premier League. Relegation has changed everything. Fernandes is not believed to be willing to play in the Championship next season and a move appears inevitable.
Manchester United are keen to sign three new central midfielders this summer. A deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is thought to have already been agreed. Adding Fernandes would be another major piece of their rebuild.
