Aston Villa Told to Bid for Real Sociedad Defender Jon Martin

Reports suggest Emery has a sizeable transfer warchest at his disposal. Earlier this week Villa were said to have failed with an offer worth over £43m for a young Serie A star. At the same time the club reportedly set an asking price for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez who continues to attract interest away from the West Midlands.

Now attention turns to Martin. Sources claim Emery has given the green light for a bid worth €25m which converts to roughly £21.57m. The 20 year old centre-back already has four caps for Spain Under-21s. Real Sociedad rate him so highly they tied him down to a contract running until 2031. He made 50 appearances across all competitions this season and featured prominently in their Copa del Rey winning campaign.

Arsenal and Barcelona are also in the race for his signature. That makes Villa outsiders if formal offers arrive from those two. Real Sociedad are not budging easily either. Club officials reportedly have no intention of selling below his €50m release clause which stands at roughly £43.14m.

There are reasons for Villa to be cautious. Martin managed just one clean sheet in 25 La Liga starts during the 2025-26 season. That lone shutout came at home against 16th placed Levante. He did keep back to back clean sheets against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey semi-finals but the league numbers suggest he may not be ready to immediately improve Villa’s backline. For now the talent is obvious but the consistency is not.
