  • Iran fires at IsraelIran has fired missiles towards Israel for the first time since a ceasefire paused hostilities in April. Tehran said it had repeatedly warned it would not tolerate ceasefire violations and attacks on Lebanon. Responding to the escalation, Donald Trump said: “You’ve shot your missiles, that’s enough.”
  • Israel strikes Beirut: Israel launched its own attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, saying it was in response to attacks from the Iran-backed militia. It had abandoned previous attack plans on Monday under US and Iranian pressure. Israel has continued to strike the south of the country over the weekend, as a ceasefire in Lebanon has failed to hold.
  • Trump discusses “seriously injured” supreme leader: Donald Trump has spoken at length about the state of the war in a pre-recorded NBC News interview. He said Iran’s new supreme leader was “very seriously injured”. He reiterated a deal with Tehran is “very close” but there were still “a couple” of sticking points.
  • US downs Iranian drones: In spite of a ceasefire, the US and Iran have once more traded attacks over the weekend. A ceasefire has been in force since 17 April – in name only – and has been violated repeatedly by both Israel and Iran

Iran’s foreign ministry says its armed forces hit several “military targets” north of the “occupied Palestinian terroritories”.

In a statement, the ministry says the strikes come after a “repeated violation” of the April ceasefire between the US, Iran and Israel, including US attacks on Iranian ships and targets in the south of the country.

A ceasefire has been in force since 17 April – in name only – and has been violated repeatedly by both Israel and Iran.

The US said last week that it hit Iranian military sites over the weekend, while Tehran said it responded by targeting a US base.

Iran’s foreign ministry adds the country is defending its security and national interests, warning that any attack from Israel against Lebanon or the Islamic Republic of Iran would be met with “a crushing and comprehensive response”.

Analysis: Netanyahu won’t be in the mood to take instruction

The Iranian missiles launched at Israel earlier represents “another moment of jeopardy” for Donald Trump, our US correspondent David Blevins reports from Washington.

The US president’s call to Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate – which is understood to be taking place now – may struggle to have its desired effect, he says.

“We already know there was a very heated exchange between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu last week over Israel’s strikes on southern Lebanon, with the US president describing the Israeli prime minister at one point as f****** crazy.

“So I’m not sure Netanyahu is going to be in the mood to take instruction or even advice from Trump right now.”
