Anthropic Releases Claude Fable 5 After Calling It Too Dangerous for the Public

The company admitted the release carries real danger.

Its own statement said releasing a model this capable comes with risks. Fable’s capabilities exceed those of any model Anthropic has ever made generally available.

Safeguards and user limitations are in place but the genie is out.

Mythos was originally shared only with a small group of organisations for testing. Anthropic justified the caution by pointing to the tool’s ability to exploit and hack computer systems.

Canadian Finance Minister François Philippe Champagne told Source in April that the attention on Mythos was warranted. He said part of the fear was the unknown unknown.

US government agencies have also been testing Mythos despite an ongoing lawsuit from Anthropic against the Department of Defense.

The company refuses to accept government use of its AI tools in that context but testing continues regardless.

Anthropic is expected to go public soon with a private valuation nearing one trillion dollars.

Showing better and broader AI capabilities consistently underlines its value to investors. About 150 groups that previewed Mythos will now receive access to Claude Mythos 5 without limitations on cybersecurity or biology depending on specific use cases. Those groups have already reported finding more than 10,000 critical security flaws in their systems using earlier versions.

Both Fable and Mythos are essentially the same model with different safeguards and access levels. They can work unattended on human commands for longer periods than any previous Claude model. The company intends to expand access to Mythos 5 through a broader trusted access program soon.

Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark told Source last week that the speed of AI advancement worries even those building it. He said the public should have the option to take their foot off the gas and put it on the brake. Right now he argued the AI industry has a gas pedal but no brake pedal. Then his company released Fable 5 anyway.
