Real Madrid released an official statement confirming the Board of Directors had approved the bid. The statement said Atletico expressed gratitude for the proposal made within the framework of good relations between both clubs. It also noted Atletico had rejected the offer and referred to the player’s release clause which stands at €500m or roughly £432m.
Atletico did not stay quiet. They posted their own response on social media and it was brutal. They accused Real Madrid of editing out the part of a Pope video where he said he was an Atleti fan. They added that Real Madrid must have confused education with gratitude and made it clear they thank them for nothing. Atletico stated plainly that they neither study nor consider any offer for Alvarez.

The mockery did not stop there. Atletico said Real Madrid makes them laugh even more than Barcelona does. They signed off by asking Real Madrid to stop stealing players from their academy and sarcastically thanked them. Five laughing face emojis were also placed on Real Madrid’s original post.
Alvarez is a World Cup winner with Argentina. He joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 and has been impressive ever since. He has scored 49 goals and registered 17 assists in 106 appearances across all competitions. During the 2025-26 campaign he managed 20 goals and nine assists in 49 matches. Atletico reached the Copa del Rey final and the Champions League semi-finals with Alvarez playing a key role.
Real Madrid may return with an improved offer but Atletico’s public stance leaves little room for negotiation. The release clause remains the only clear path and that number is €500m.
