Russian jets dangerously intercept RAF spy plane over the Black Sea in the most hostile move since a missile was fired at a British aircraft

Two Russian warplanes buzzed an unarmed British spy plane last month. One got so close the RAF jet’s emergency systems kicked in and its autopilot shut down. Another screamed past just six metres from the nose. The Ministry of Defence has now gone public. This was the most dangerous Russian action against a British aircraft since 2022.

The Rivet Joint surveillance plane was on a routine international flight. It was helping secure Nato’s eastern flank. It had no weapons. It posed no threat. That did not stop a Russian Su-35 from closing in dangerously. A Su-27 followed up with six aggressive passes. The crew were shaken. They kept their nerve.

Defence Secretary John Healey praised the outstanding professionalism of the RAF crew. He called the Russian flybys unacceptable. These actions create a serious risk of accidents and potential escalation. The UK has summoned the Russian embassy and demanded condemnation. The message is clear. This kind of recklessness will not be tolerated.

The MoD says this is part of a pattern. Russian submarine activity has been spotted near critical underwater infrastructure in the North Sea. The aggression is not limited to the air. It is happening above and below the surface.

The Rivet Joint is no ordinary aircraft. It uses advanced sensors to intercept and analyze signals across the electromagnetic spectrum. It provides real-time strategic and tactical intelligence. It flies out of Lincolnshire with No 51 Squadron. The crew know the risk. In 2022, a rogue Russian pilot fired two missiles at a Rivet Joint over the Black Sea. One missile missed. Russia called it a technical malfunction. The MoD publicly accepted that explanation. Western defence sources later said the pilot fired after receiving an ambiguous command from the ground. The truth took months to surface.

This latest incident confirms the danger is not fading. Russian pilots are playing games inches from disaster. Unarmed British crews are staring into the cockpit of hostile fighter jets and holding steady. The professionalism holds. The tension rises.
