Large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine leaves four dead and the images coming out of Kyiv are devastating. Russia fired hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles overnight into Sunday. Explosions ripped through the capital and surrounding regions. At least 83 people are injured. Residential buildings are burning. A museum is in ruins. And Russia says it used one of its most feared weapons again.
The numbers from Ukraine’s air force are staggering. From Saturday evening, they detected 90 missiles and 600 drones. They shot down or intercepted 55 missiles and 549 drones. That still left enough getting through to hit more than 50 locations across Kyiv alone. Shopping centres. Emergency services buildings. A water supply facility. Residential towers with families inside.

Two people died in the capital. One was killed when a nine-storey building in the Shevchenko district took a direct hit. Fire erupted on the upper floors. In the same district, a strike near a school air raid shelter blocked the entrance with debris, trapping people inside. Emergency crews worked through the night pulling survivors from the wreckage.
Two more died in the wider Kyiv region. Regional head Mykola Kalashnyk called it deliberate terror against peaceful people.
Then there is the Chernobyl Museum. The building was effectively destroyed. Ukraine’s Interior Minister said it was a deliberate attack on history, memory, and truth. Photos show shattered windows and rubble where exhibits once stood.
Russia says it used the Oreshnik hypersonic missile in the strikes. This would be only the third time the weapon has been deployed in the War. It travels at more than ten times the speed of sound. It is reportedly impossible to intercept. It can carry conventional or nuclear warheads. Zelensky said it hit the city of Bila Tserkva. Ukraine’s presidential office later said it could not confirm that and was still investigating what was used.
The attack came after Zelensky warned that Russia was planning something. He said it might involve the Oreshnik. That warning is now reality.
Russia’s justification is that this was retaliation. Putin accused Ukraine of hitting a student dormitory in occupied Starobilsk on Friday. 21 people died. Ukraine says it struck an elite Russian military unit in the same area. The cycle of accusation and retaliation is spinning out of control.
European leaders condemned the strikes immediately. French President Macron and German Chancellor Merz both condemned the reported use of the Oreshnik. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called it political scare-tactics and reckless nuclear brinkmanship. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described awful scenes in Kyiv and vowed to keep up pressure on Russia.
Russia says it hit command posts, not civilians. The burning apartment blocks and shattered museum tell a different story.
