Rubio visits India to sell energy as Iran oil shock persists and the desperation is barely hidden behind diplomatic smiles.
The US Secretary of State touched down in Kolkata on Saturday for a four-day visit. He will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will attend a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. He will tour Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. But the real reason he is there is energy. The Strait of Hormuz is effectively closed. Iran has turned the world’s most important oil passage into a weapon. India is suffocating.

More than eighty percent of India’s energy comes from imports. 1.4 billion people depend on overseas fuel for cooking gas, petrol, and daily survival. The closure of the strait has hit India harder than almost any other country. The US sees an opportunity. Rubio put it bluntly before arriving. America wants to sell India as much energy as it will buy. US production is at historic levels. The sales pitch is ready.
There is a catch. The route from the US to India is much longer and far more expensive than the old route through the Gulf. Analysts say filling the shortfall entirely with American oil makes no economic sense. But India is under pressure. Trump has been fuming about the trade deficit. India sold $58.2 billion more to the US than it bought last year. That number irritates Washington deeply. Buying American energy helps close the gap.
Trump has claimed India committed to buying more than $500 billion worth of American goods. The actual trade is a fraction of that. No tangible investment commitments have followed. Mukesh Ambani, one of India’s richest men, has stayed noticeably silent on Trump’s claim that Reliance will back a $300 billion refinery in Texas. Big numbers make headlines. Reality is quieter.
There is also the Pakistan problem. Trump has openly called Pakistan’s army chief his favourite field marshal. Islamabad is mediating between Iran and the US. That has brought the two countries closer. Delhi is watching uneasily. Rubio is unlikely to make public statements about Pakistan. Those conversations will stay behind closed doors.
On tariffs, things have improved slightly. Trump cut reciprocal levies from fifty percent to eighteen percent, then down to ten percent after a court ruling. Indian exports to the US held steady at $87.3 billion last year. In April, $8.5 billion worth of goods were shipped. The trajectory is positive but fragile.
India has also been busy elsewhere. Free trade agreements have been signed with the UK, European Union, Australia, and Oman. Delhi is hedging its bets. It knows Washington cannot be its only partner.
The Quad meeting on May 26 will test whether the grouping still has a pulse. Trump was bullish on it in his first term. The summit was due last year but his lukewarm response left it on life support. No confirmation yet on whether he will attend this year’s leaders’ summit in Delhi.
On Iran, India will resist any push to send military assets to the Strait of Hormuz. Delhi’s position is clear. Diplomacy only. No warships. Rubio knows this. The visit will be friendly. The pressure behind it is real. India needs oil. America wants to sell it. Everything else is just conversation.
