It was just before 6pm local time. A young man walked up to the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, right near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. He pulled a revolver from his bag and started shooting at the White House checkpoint. Secret Service officers stationed on the corner did not hesitate. They returned fire immediately.

The gunman was struck and rushed to hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after. A bystander was also wounded. No officers were hurt. President Trump was inside the White House at the time but was never in danger.

US media identified the suspect as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old known to both the Secret Service and DC police. He had a documented history of mental health conditions. Law enforcement sources say he attempted to enter the White House in July 2025 and was arrested nearby. He spent time in a psychiatric facility after that incident. He had been living in Washington DC for eighteen months. Despite being on their radar, he still walked up to the most secure building on earth with a loaded revolver and opened fire.

Trump thanked the Secret Service for their swift and professional action. He noted the suspect had a violent history and a possible obsession with the White House. He also tied the shooting to the earlier attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last month, saying it proved why his planned White House ballroom needs to be the most secure space ever built.

Reporters on the North Lawn heard the shots ring out. ABC’s Selina Wang recorded herself ducking behind cover as a volley of gunfire echoed across the lawn. CBS reporter Aaron Navarro heard what sounded like different guns firing from just outside the grounds. Secret Service officers shouted at journalists to get inside. They were locked in the press briefing room for thirty minutes.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson both praised the Secret Service for their decisive action.
