The Strait of Hormuz taught us this week that announcements without action mean nothing and the same lesson applies to domestic security when plots get stopped before the public even knows they exist. Kash Patel confirmed on Tuesday that the FBI shut down a coordinated attack planned for the UFC event at the White House and multiple suspects are now in custody. The details that emerged from unsealed court documents paint a picture of a strike designed for maximum carnage and chaos and the fact it was stopped cold is a testament to how fast things moved behind the scenes.
Â
The plan involved explosive laden drones striking nearby buildings to trigger panic and send the crowd fleeing toward a sniper team waiting to pick people off. A second wave of attackers was then supposed to storm the White House gate while everyone was scrambling. Around 4300 invited guests were on the South Lawn with another 85000 watching from a nearby fan zone. The scale of potential victims was enormous and the plotters knew exactly what they were doing when they picked this event. Fourteen fighters competed back to back while the alleged conspiracy sat quietly in encrypted chats waiting for its moment.

The case cracked open because of a mother who paid attention. Tycen Proper a 19 year old from Ohio was communicating with an online group that pushed ultra religious and antigovernment rhetoric and his mother called local authorities on the evening of 10 June after seeing large firearms purchases and disturbing messages. She did not wait and she did not hesitate and her call reached investigators just days before the event was scheduled. Proper admitted during an FBI interview on 11 June that he was part of planning the attack and said the group started communicating around March 2026 through a TikTok group called Vanguard of the Old. From there they moved to Signal the encrypted messaging app where the actual plans took shape.
Â
The group discussed grievances about government corruption and the handling of the Epstein files and data centers consuming community water supplies and other government actions that had radicalised them. They talked about shooting high value targets identified as wealthy people and politicians attending the fight. They wanted to jumpstart a revolution and they believed former military members were among their ranks which gave them a false sense of operational capability. Five people are in custody now and investigators are still hunting others who remain at large. Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn called it a serious threat and made it clear the investigation is nowhere near finished.
Â
The White House event was part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations and coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday. A massive arena called The Claw was erected behind the White House and administration members and celebrities filled the seats. The irony of Trump telling reporters at the G7 summit in France that he had not heard about the plot while Vance described the FBI disclosure as necessary because the scale of the planned attack is so significant was not lost on anyone paying attention. The president found out roughly when the public did which raises its own set of questions about information flow during a holiday weekend.
Â
This comes roughly two months after a shooting at the White House Correspondents dinner where Trump was present and a month after Secret Service agents killed a man who opened fire at a White House checkpoint. The pattern is impossible to ignore and the persistence of these threats suggests the security apparatus is running on adrenaline and overtime. The difference this time was a tip from someone who saw the warning signs and acted immediately. That is the thin line between a thwarted plot and a national tragedy and it held firm on Sunday.
