The agreement will see one million tonnes of liquefied natural gas shipped annually from British Columbia to Germany for up to 20 years. Shipments start in the early 2030s. The buyer is SEFE, Germany’s national energy utility. The supplier is Ksi Lisims, a massive proposed LNG project on Canada’s Pacific coast. This is the first long term LNG deal Canada has ever signed with Europe. Ever.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre called the announcement headlines without deadlines and illusions without reality. Fourteen Liberal MPs signed a letter saying they are deeply concerned about backsliding on environmental commitments. Former environment minister Steven Guilbeault announced he is resigning from caucus this summer. The deal is a win for energy security. It is also a stress test for the coalition holding the government together.
Separately, Carney announced Canada will buy early warning aircraft technology from Sweden instead of the US. He said the days of sending 70 cents of every military dollar to America are over.
