The World Cup trophies history is stranger than most football fans realise.

Many legends have lifted it but not everyone knows there have been two completely different designs.

The original trophy has been missing for over four decades and what we see today is actually the replacement.

So what happened to the first one and why did FIFA make the switch.

The original Jules Rimet trophy was introduced in 1930 when FIFA launched the first ever tournament.

It was named after Jules Rimet who served as FIFA president for 33 years between 1921 and 1954.

French sculptor Abel Lafleur designed the trophy and it depicted Nike the ancient Greek goddess of victory holding a chalice above her head.

The trophy was crafted from gold plated sterling silver and mounted on a lapis lazuli base.

During World War II Italian football official Ottorino Barassi hid it in a shoe box under his bed in Rome to stop the Nazis from getting their hands on it.

Then came the bizarre chapter just before the 1966 World Cup in England.

The trophy was stolen during a public exhibition and the whole country went into panic mode.

Days later a dog named Pickles found it wrapped in newspaper beneath a garden hedge in South London.

A mixed breed collie became a national hero overnight and England went on to win that very trophy a few months later.

Bobby Moore lifting the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley remains one of the most iconic images in football.

Brazil earned permanent possession of the Jules Rimet trophy in 1970 after becoming the first nation to win the World Cup three times.

It was sent to Rio de Janeiro and displayed at the Brazilian FA headquarters.

Then in 1983 disaster struck again.

The trophy was stolen and this time it was never recovered.

It is widely believed to have been melted down and sold for its gold.

By that point FIFA had already moved on and introduced a brand new design.

The replacement World Cup trophy was created by Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga and it has been in use since 1974.

He also designed the UEFA Europa League trophy so the man clearly had a gift for capturing football glory in metal.

The design shows two human figures lifting Planet Earth and FIFA says it captures the global and unifying spirit of the game.

It stands 36 centimetres tall and is cast in 18 carat gold.

West Germany were the first team to lift this redesigned version when they won the tournament in 1974.

FIFA learned a hard lesson from the Jules Rimet saga.

The current trophy is never awarded permanently to any nation no matter how many times they win.

Champions get to hold the real trophy during the post match ceremony and pose for the cameras.

After that they receive a gold plated replica to keep while the original stays safely with FIFA.

One trophy was hidden under a bed and then found by a dog and later melted down by thieves.

The other is locked down so tight even a three time winner cannot keep it forever.

That is the wild story behind the most coveted prize in sport.
