Iran better get moving fast or there will not be anything left of them. Time is of the essence. The words landed like a hammer as he prepared to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Iranian media fired back. The US has failed to make any concrete concessions in response to Tehran’s latest proposals. Without compromise from Washington, the talks are heading for an impasse. That was the message from the semi-official Mehr news agency. Both sides are digging in. Neither is blinking.

Washington responded with its own list. Five conditions according to Iranian media. Iran would keep only one nuclear site operational. Its stockpile of highly enriched uranium would be transferred to the United States. Trump suggested on Friday he might accept a twenty-year suspension of the nuclear programme rather than a total shutdown. That appeared to be a shift. It has not been enough to break the deadlock.
The Ceasefire announced in early April is barely holding. Trump said earlier this week it was on massive life support. He rejected Tehran’s demands as totally unacceptable. Now the threats are back. A whole civilisation will die unless a deal is reached. The clock is ticking.
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed. Iran controls it. Oil prices have soared. The US is enforcing its own blockade on Iranian ports. Pakistan is mediating but the gap between the two sides remains wide. The air strikes that began on February 28 have paused. The danger has not.
