The World Health Organization has pulled the trigger. An Ebola outbreak tearing through eastern DR Congo is now a public health emergency of international concern. 246 suspected cases. 80 deaths. Eight laboratory confirmations. And now the virus has crossed into Uganda. A 59-year-old man is dead. He tested positive. His body has already been sent back across the border.
This strain is different. It is the Bundibugyo virus. There are no approved drugs. No vaccines. Nothing proven to stop it once it takes hold. Early symptoms look like the flu. Fever. Muscle pain. Fatigue. Headache. Sore throat. Then the bleeding starts. Vomiting. Diarrhoea. A rash. Organ failure follows fast. The fatality rate sits around fifty percent.

The outbreak is centered in Ituri province. Cases have been reported in the capital Bunia and the gold-mining towns of Mongwalu and Rwampara. One case has already reached Kinshasa. The patient is believed to have traveled from Ituri. That means the virus has moved from the east to the capital. The geography alone is terrifying.
WHO director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned there are significant uncertainties about the true number of infected and how far the virus has really spread. High population mobility. Urban hotspots. Informal healthcare facilities everywhere. The conditions for rapid spread are all in place. The security situation in DR Congo is already fragile. The humanitarian crisis is deep. This outbreak is feeding on chaos.
Countries bordering DR Congo are on high alert. Trade routes. Travel routes. The virus does not check passports. The WHO has told DR Congo and Uganda to establish emergency operation centers immediately. Confirmed cases must be isolated and treated until two tests come back negative at least 48 hours apart. Surveillance must be enhanced. Borders should not be closed. The WHO warned that such measures are based on fear, not science.
Africa CDC is deeply concerned. Urban settings like Rwampara and Bunia are dangerous flashpoints. Mining activities in Mongwalu bring people together in close quarters. Population movement between affected areas and neighboring countries is constant. Regional coordination is no longer optional. It is essential.
Ebola was first discovered in 1976 in what is now DR Congo. This is the seventeenth outbreak in the country’s history. Around 15,000 people have died from the virus across Africa over the past fifty years. The deadliest outbreak ran from 2018 to 2020 and killed nearly 2,300 people. Last year, 45 more died in a remote region. The virus keeps returning. And once again, the world is scrambling to catch up.
