Indian bride dies and the nation cannot look away. Twisha Sharma was a model. An actor. A beauty pageant winner. She married lawyer Samarth Singh in December 2025. Five months later, she was dead in her matrimonial home. What happened in between has now split India into two camps. Murder or suicide. Grieving family or powerful in-laws. The case has everything the media loves and everything that makes dowry deaths in India a never-ending nightmare.

Twisha’s family says she was tortured. They say the demands for dowry started almost immediately after the wedding. They say the taunts were constant. The wedding was not up to their standards. The family was not good enough. Despite giving dowry at the time of marriage, the harassment never stopped. Giving and receiving dowry is illegal in India. It happens every day anyway.

Then came the pregnancy in April. Twisha’s family drops an allegation that chills the blood. They say her husband and mother-in-law accused her of carrying someone else’s baby. They say she was forced into an abortion in the first week of May. Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law and a retired judge, denies everything. She says Twisha insisted on the abortion because she did not want children.

On May 12, Twisha called her mother on WhatsApp. They were talking. Then the line dropped. Twenty minutes of silence. Then Giribala Singh picked up the phone and said the words no parent should ever hear. She is no more. The family says the in-laws never called the police. A retired judge surely knows the protocol, her father asked. Giribala Singh says they were focused on rushing Twisha to hospital.

The first post-mortem report says hanging. It also notes injuries sustained before death. The family refused to cremate the body. They demanded a second autopsy. The high court granted it on Friday.

Samarth Singh is gone. Absconding. A cash reward has been announced for information. A lookout notice is active so he cannot flee the country. His mother says she does not know where he is. She says their lawyer advised him to stay away because he would be lynched if he showed his face. She says her son has lost a deeply loved companion and cannot even grieve because everyone is against them.

Giribala Singh has not helped herself. She held a press conference. She gave long interviews. She discussed Twisha’s mental health publicly. She called her liberal and when asked to explain, she spoke of promiscuity. The outrage was immediate. Calls for her arrest flooded social media. An Instagram page called Justice for Twisha Sharma has become part of the news coverage.

Bhopal’s police commissioner initially said the evidence pointed to suicide. He acknowledged lapses in the investigation. The family rejected that conclusion entirely. They insisted it was murder and accused influential people of trying to derail the case. Then the Chief Minister stepped in. The case has now been handed to the CBI. Federal police. The highest level.

Twisha’s father says his daughter was wronged in her lifetime and every effort is now being made to deny her justice even in death. He says the family will not rest. The cameras are rolling. The country is watching. The truth is still somewhere between a locked bathroom door and a family that says they saw this coming.
