This year the sticker book is the largest ever.
At first glance it is hard to see what the fuss is about.
They are just stickers after all.

Yet for decades children and some adults have excitedly bought traded and coveted stacks of stickers featuring the best football players in the world.
The thrill of shuffling through a friend’s swaps pile in the hope of finding that one missing sticker is unforgettable.
The words got got got need rang out across playgrounds everywhere.
The fervour rivals collecting baseball cards or Pokémon Trading Cards.
So does the frustration of seeing the same stickers again and again.

Some stickers become so sought after that they sell for huge sums.
One 1979 sticker of Diego Maradona sold at auction in 2021 for £413,000.
Ahead of the 2026 World Cup demand is stronger than ever.
More than 8,000 fans recently gathered at a massive swap meeting in Santiago Chile.
Their aim is to fill an album with icons of every player from every competing team.
With this year’s album being the biggest ever released it will be quite some challenge.

So what does it take to complete the 2026 Panini World Cup sticker album.
The answer depends on your strategy.

The 2026 album comes with 980 blank spaces to fill.
By comparison there were just 270 stickers in the 1970 World Cup and 670 in 2022.
If you plan to buy packet after packet alone you will need deep pockets.
Stickers come in packs of seven costing two dollars per pack in the US and one pound twenty five in the UK.
The minimum outlay looks like 280 dollars or 175 pounds.

But that would require every sticker you find to be a new one with no swaps.
While statistically possible it is practically impossible.
In reality for each gap you want to fill you will end up buying multiple stickers.
After your first sticker the probability the next one is new stands at 979 out of 980.
That means on average you need just over one sticker to fill the next slot.
The trend continues with each new spot becoming slightly harder to fill.

As the probability of finding different stickers early on is close to one repeats are unlikely for a while.
But as you draw closer to completing the album the expected number of stickers needed balloons massively.
To obtain the penultimate sticker you face a probability of two out of 980 for each sticker you buy.
On average you would need to buy 490 stickers to fill that gap.
The last sticker is even worse.
On average you would need to buy 980 stickers to find that elusive final one.

In total you would expect to buy 7,316 stickers.
That adds up to roughly 2,100 dollars in the US or 1,300 pounds in the UK.
The formula behind this involves the harmonic series a well known mathematical object named after overtones in music.
It crops up in many areas from market research to ecology where scientists use it to estimate species in a habitat.

The harmonic series also explains why filling the first half of the album is so much more satisfying than the second.
To fill the first 490 gaps you would expect to buy just 679 stickers.
To fill the second half you would need another 6,637 stickers.

This is where swapping with friends changes everything.
If you have ten friends all collecting together you need roughly 26,230 stickers total.
That works out at about 2,385 stickers each costing roughly 680 dollars or 430 pounds.
Even with just four friends the cost drops to about 850 dollars or 530 pounds each.
Swapping saves serious money.

There is another way.
You can head to the Panini website and order any missing stickers.
They typically cost twice as much as a normal sticker and there is a strict limit on how many you can buy.
The most cost effective strategy is to collect the first 490 stickers by buying packets.
That costs about 200 dollars or 120 pounds.
Then order the rest from the website.
That costs about 280 dollars or 175 pounds.
Total cost comes to around 480 dollars or 300 pounds.
Whether Panini lets you order 490 missing stickers directly is another question entirely.

Of course in the modern age you can collect your stickers in an online album.
There is no need to go to shops or spend time swapping with friends.
No need to painstakingly stick each one into the right place.
But where is the fun in that.
