Across Russia, other parades were either scaled back or canceled outright. In Vladivostok, locals marched in the Immortal Regiment procession honoring war veterans. Some cities featured military vehicles, but most were vintage World War Two models, not modern hardware. The contrast with previous years was impossible to ignore.
Putin laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier after the ceremony. He attended a reception at the Kremlin. The rituals were observed. The traditions were honored. But the empty space where tanks used to roll through Red Square said more than any speech ever could.
