Millions of fans are staring at blank screens because World Cup broadcast rights India China remain unsigned just weeks before the opening ceremony.

Negotiations between FIFA and broadcasters in both nations have dragged on far longer than usual. This kind of uncertainty is almost unheard of for a tournament of this magnitude. Deals are typically locked down months or even years in advance.

FIFA has confirmed deals are complete in 180 territories globally. Yet a handful of countries are still missing. India and China represent roughly a third of the world’s population. Neither has secured the rights to air the matches yet. A source stated that talks are ongoing and must remain confidential at this stage.

The main sticking point appears to be money. Local media reports describe a wrangling contest over the price tag. State-controlled newspaper Beijing Daily reported that FIFA’s initial offer to China Central Television was as high as 300 million dollars. That figure has reportedly been lowered to between 120 and 150 million dollars. Even with the reduction that amount is still more than double CCTV’s budget for the event.

Why World Cup broadcast rights India China are stuck in limbo

China faces unique hurdles this time. The national team did not qualify for the tournament. Beijing Daily noted this reality dampens overall interest among casual fans. The time difference also poses a massive problem. Many high-profile matches will kick off in the early hours of the morning for Chinese viewers which makes advertising revenue harder to project.

Things moved much faster for previous tournaments. FIFA announced an exclusive agreement with CCTV for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups back in November 2017. That was years ahead of schedule. The current delay highlights how the landscape and perhaps the perceived value have shifted.

The situation in India differs slightly. While no official agreement has been signed yet local media reported this week that a deal is likely to be announced soon. Fans are holding their breath. The clock is ticking and with the tournament set to start the pressure is mounting on all sides to get the contracts across the finish line.
