Police Name Tag Enforcement Takes Center Stage as IGP Cracks Down on Identification Rules
The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has given a firm order. Every officer must wear a name tag on their uniform at all times. The public deserves to know who they are dealing with. The only exception applies to personnel working undercover.
Disu made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing Commissioners of Police. He pointed to the high table where senior officers sat with their name tags clearly visible. That visual alone drove the message home. This is the standard that must be followed across the board.
The IGP did not mince words. He told the Commissioners that whatever happens within their jurisdiction is their direct responsibility. Enforcing the name tag rule is now part of that duty. The meeting was called specifically to address lapses like this.
State Police Proposal Already Before National Assembly
The police chief also opened up on the federal government’s move toward establishing state police. Once the signal came through, the force leadership decided to act rather than wait.
Disu revealed that a detailed position paper has been drafted. Several models were studied. Thorough comparisons were made. The document has now been transmitted to the National Assembly for further action.
The gathering sent one clear message. The days of loose discipline are ending. Officers who fail to display their identity will face consequences. The public can expect more accountability moving forward.
